A Review of the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas

The Oldest Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip
The Flamingo hotel and casino has been at its current location on the Las Vegas Strip since 1946. It is one of the most historical hotels in Las Vegas, having once been owned by notorious mobster Bugsy Siegel. It was built by Del Webb's construction company. Del Webb once owned the New York Yankees and would later own the Mint hotel and casino on Fremont Street in Downtown Las Vegas. Some of you might remember the other connection between The Mint and The Flamingo: they were the two hotels that Hunter S. Thompson's alter-ego Raoul Duke stayed at with his lawyer Dr. Gonzo in the best-selling book "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", which was loosely based on real events.
Without The Flamingo, there probably wouldn't be a Las Vegas Strip, or it would be located in a different area of Las Vegas. When it opened with just 105 rooms, it was called the most luxurious hotel in the world. Siegel wanted it that way, and he put it 7 miles away from Fremont Street to get away from the old west saloon atmosphere of the old Las Vegas hotels.
The price of rooms, and entertainment
Rooms at the Flamingo are very affordable considering its location in the middle of The Strip. For a regular weekday you can sometimes rooms for as low as $40 a night for the basic Deluxe Room. Those prices can range all the way up to $275 a night for a premium day like New Year's Eve. Upgraded rooms included the GO Deluxe and GO Luxury with a View, which are both very nice and competitively priced compared to other luxury rooms on the Strip. The top room option is the Neapolitan Suite, which is about $280 a night on weekdays and up to $400 or more on weekends. Book special days like New Year's several months in advance, because they do sell out.
I'm going to be honest: I don't enjoy the entertainment The Flamingo has offered over the past decade. They have George Wallace, an alleged comedian who isn't even famous enough to be considered D-list. They have John Edwards, the alleged psychic who really just plays with the emotions of people who haven't been able to cope with the lost of loved ones. They have Donnie and Marie, the alleged brother and sister (they claim they aren't lovers) who sing corny songs for geriatrics. If I were you, I'd spend my day hanging out at the pool, the spa, the wildlife habitat, or one of the bars like Bugsy's Bar or The Garden Bar. At night, go to dinner at Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville and then check out one of the better shows at a nearby hotel like Caesar's Palace, which always books some A-listers.

Well...compared to the more luxurious hotels That have popped up all over the strip The Flamingo is not impressive. What makes it a great hotel is the history behind it, the great value, the central location and I like the fact you don't have to walk blocks just to get out of the hotel. For the time spent in a room sleeping, it's perfect.
