Biography

Miguel Calderon is a Mexican artist and actor. His art includes oil paintings depicting masked shirtless men on mini-motorbikes attacking other shirtless men in blue jeans. This has often been described as low brow, but I find it unique compared to some other art on the scene today.

Calderon's art gained popularity when it was featured in the Wes Anderson movie The Royal Tenenbaums. Some have speculated that Anderson included the art in his movie because he owned the Calderon paintings and he was hoping the exposure would increase their value. As you can see in the picture at the bottom, a Calderon painting was featured prominently above the couch in character Eli Cash's apartment.

The character of Eli Cash fit in well with Calderon's artwork, which often shows people who could be described as a version of the modern day cowboy.

Calderon's art is on display all over the world, including at the Guggenheim in Madrid. Many of Calderon's paintings show imagery that unfortunately cannot be shown on this family-friendly website, but I have included some shots of his more G-rated works below.

Wow, thank you for this article. I wouldn't say this is my usual taste in art but it definately makes you take notice of it. I remember seeing this artist's work in the Royal Tenenbaums and wondering about the artist behind them. I'm happy to finally have a name to go with the art work.
