The Pop Art of Roy Lichtenstein

Roy Lichtenstein is a famous pop artist whose style will remind most people of the art they see in comic books. Lichtenstein himself viewed his style as industrial art. He became famous in the 1960's as his paintings were seen as a reflection of popular culture. They may have looked like blocks out of a comic strip, but they were so much more. Along with Andy Warhol, Lichtenstein remains one of the great influences on the ever evolving genre of pop art. Lichtenstein passed in 1997. Today some of his works sell for millions of dollars apiece.

Although some might be quick to suggest that Lichtenstein is no better than a comic book artist, they would fail to see the depth in his work. For one thing, the process he used was much more intricate than just coloring in a sketch and sending it to a publisher. They'd also miss the biting satire in his work.

By working with mostly primary colors, there is a certain playfulness to Lichtenstein's art that is often absent in the stodgy art world. While his work might seem out of place next to a Klimpt, it looks perfect in a modern home with contemporary styling.
